PRESS RELEASE (VISUAL ARTS)

On August 19, Gallery Connexion’s Annex Gallery reveals “Locals,” a new exhibition by photographer Mike Erb, showing areas of Fredericton that are off the beaten path. The Annex Gallery is located in the Playhouse at 686 Queen St.. Please join us for an opening reception Thursday, August 19 at 5 p.m., featuring live music by Owen Steel. The exhibition will run until September 28, 2010.

“Locals” is a new body of work by Erb, a St. Thomas University Journalism student who studied photography at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in Fredericton. Although the creation of this project has been grueling, as endless hours were spent scouring rooftops, getting dirty and being hassled, Erb says it has shown him the true beauty of what a community is, if you take the time to learn about it and its people.

“Fredericton is often shown as a clean tourist destination of New Brunswick where you can stuff your face full of samosas while watching the changing of the guard,” Erb says. “Every community’s urban landscape is worth exploring. Amongst our everyday surroundings there are hidden locations that one can be comfortable in.” It is his hope that the work inspires viewers to learn more about their community. Erb’s present interests rest mainly in live music, landscape and portrait photography. With travel being one of his main passions, Mike plans to pursue a career in

photo-journalism.

The Annex Gallery is an initiative between Gallery Connexion and the Fredericton Playhouse to provide a juried exhibition space for Gallery Connexion members and for the Playhouse to include a programmed exhibitions in its galleries.
